The Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Shedrack Azubuike, has ordered the immediate desilting of all drainages in the area as a way to beat impending flooding.

According to the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook unveiled in Abuja last month, Anambra is one of the states in Nigeria expected to witness massive flooding this year.

As a way to mitigate the impact of the expected flood, Azubuike has commenced massive sensitization among people of Orumba South Local Government Area on the need to clear all water canal and drainages.

Speaking to journalists, Azubuike said: “The clearing and desilting of drainage channels across all communities in the local government has commenced.

“The idea is to prevent erosion and also curtail the impact of flooding as we approach the peak of the rainy season.

“The desilting exercise would also reduce the spread of diseases, and enhance the overall aesthetics of the area. The exercise would be carried out in all parts of the LGA to improve the free flow of stormwater.

“This exercise is in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s ‘Operation Clean, Green, and Sustainable Anambra’, and it is aimed at ensuring that communities are neat, safe and habitable for all.

“Clearing these drains will help prevent avoidable flooding that could result in the loss of lives and property. Our goal is to make Orumba South a model of cleanliness in Anambra State.”;
