Government Secondary School, Owerri, triumphed over Government Secondary School, Afikpo, Ebonyi State, by 10 wickets in the opening match of the 5th South East Cricket Championship held in Umuahia, Abia State, on Saturday.
In the second match, the Ide Secondary School Boys from Enugwu Ukwu, Anambra State, defeated Regina Secondary School from Enugu State by 9 wickets.
During the third match, Regina Boys won against Ohafia Model High School from Abia State by a margin of 36 runs.
During the opening of the competition on Saturday at Ibeku High School, Umuahia, the Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, stated that Governor Alex Otti is dedicated to advancing all sports within the state.
Ananaba, who was represented by the Governor's Special Adviser on Sports, Mr. Raymond Ukwa, emphasized that the government's investment is not limited to football but also encompasses other sports such as cricket, athletics, and table tennis, among others.
He also mentioned that the Umuahia Township Stadium is currently undergoing upgrades to support a wider range of sporting activities.
The commissioner further highlighted that Governor Alex Otti is identifying raw talents from the grassroots level for both Abia State and Nigeria, while also fostering peace and unity among different tribes through the organization of various sporting events.
The South East Zonal Representative of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Chika Okoro, expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for hosting the competition, noting that cricket had been neglected in Abia for a decade prior to its recent revival.
