The Imo State Government has confirmed the outbreak of diphtheria disease in parts of the state.
A statement from the Ministry of Health, signed by its Commissioner, Chioma Egu, disclosed that a number of suspected cases of the disease have been identified in Mbutu community, Aboh Mbaise LGA, following a laboratory tests.
According to the commissioner, the ministry has activated its rapid response mechanisms to contain the situation. He advised the public to be cautious of social contact.
Egu said the ministry understands the concerns the development may raise among residents and stakeholders but reassured the general public that the situation is under control.
She added that the ministry, in collaboration with relevant bodies, has deployed surveillance and medical response teams to the affected community to ensure swift identification, isolation, and treatment of cases.
“Key response actions already underway include:
Free treatment and case management of all confirmed and suspected cases. Active case search and contact tracing within the Community and surrounding areas. Risk communication and public awareness campaigns to educate residents on preventive measures
“Provision of diphtheria antitoxins and essential antibiotics. Targeted immunization for at-risk populations, especially children,”; she stated.
The commissioner urged members of the public especially residents of Mbutu and neighboring communities, to remain calm and cooperate fully with health workers and officials on the ground.
She further explained that the disease is vaccine-preventable and early detection and treatment are highly effective.
“Members of the public are advised to report any suspected symptoms, such as sore throat, fever, difficulty in breathing, or neck swelling to the nearest health facility or call the attention of our disease surveillance team (08036718000) .
“The Imo State Ministry of Health remains committed to protecting the health and safety of all citizens, in line with the vision of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, for a resilient and responsive health system. We will continue to provide timely updates as the situation evolves,”; the statement added.
Findings by our correspondent indicate that the disease has already claimed six lives in the local government, leading to close down of public and private schools.
