A former Deputy Mayor of Ohafia LGA in Abia State, Mkpa Oju Uka, has denied claims that he is currently imprisoned in London for drug trafficking and mortgage fraud.
In a statement on Wednesday, Uka dismissed the allegations as unfounded and the result of political adversaries.
He mentioned that since relocating from Lome, Togo, to the United Kingdom in 1999, he has lived there and held reputable jobs, including working for a used clothing company and as part-time staff in retail shops, earning a legitimate income.
The former local government Deputy Chairman expressed astonishment at the fraudulent claims and prison narrative, stating that he purchased property with the assistance of his wife.
He revealed that in 2017, he received a notice from the National Crime Agency (NCA) informing him that his properties were subject to a court freezing order, which he complied with by providing documentation regarding his income sources.
Uka explained that it was uncovered that the mortgage brokers who processed his applications were under investigation, prompting a broader inquiry into all their clients, including himself.
The former local government chairman noted that the NCA sought a summary judgment, which the court granted based solely on issues related to mortgage documentation, and not on any allegations of drug-related crimes.
He added, “Crucially, the court dismissed all accusations linking me or my family to drug trafficking or criminal activities, citing a lack of evidence.
“At no time was I arrested, detained, charged, or imprisoned.”
