Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abdulkadir Sani, has revealed before a Federal High Court in Abuja that he warned alleged coup plotters their plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government would fail despite receiving money from them for prayers.

The revelation came on Monday, May 11, during the continuation of the alleged coup trial in Abuja.

According to a video recorded statement played in court, the Kaduna based cleric said he was approached through an intermediary identified as Sanda to offer spiritual support for the alleged operation.

Mr Sani told investigators that after carrying out prayers, he informed the group that the plot was doomed because some members would eventually betray the others.

According to Nigeria Newsdesk he reportedly said, β€œI told them the plan would fail because they would be exposed from within”.

The cleric admitted that money was transferred to him but insisted the funds were meant for prayers and charity, not to support any coup. β€œI did not collect money for a coup. The money was for prayers,” he said.

He also disclosed that names of alleged participants were sent to him for inclusion in prayers and had been submitted to the court.
