Former Chief of Army Staff and former Ambassador to the Benin Republic, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), has vehemently refuted allegations linking him to terrorism financing.

He characterized the accusation as unfounded and entirely contrary to the values he upheld throughout his military service.

The retired General issued his response in a statement signed by former Army spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd) on Saturday.

The statement asserted that the claims were β€œbaseless, misleading, and intentionally designed to tarnish his reputation.”

It emphasized that Buratai has never been investigated, questioned, charged, or associated with any terrorism-related financing by any security or intelligence agency during his career.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that no official military, diplomatic, judicial, or administrative body has ever linked the former Army chief to terrorism funding.

The statement also pointed out that the report was based solely on personal accusations made by retired Major-General Danjuma Ali-Keffi, which it deemed malicious and completely unfounded.

Buratai's team expressed disappointment, though not surprise, that he is once again the target of what appears to be an effort to damage his public image.

They noted that similar attempts have been made in the past, all of which were unsuccessful, as his service record remains clean and thoroughly documented.

The statement underscored that Buratai dedicated over 40 years to combating terrorism, enhancing counter-insurgency operations, and assisting the military in reclaiming territories previously occupied by Boko Haram and ISWAP.

According to the statement, under his leadership, the Army reinstated government presence in numerous communities and facilitated the return of displaced families to their homes.

Buratai has urged the publication and Ali-Keffi to retract the story and issue a public apology.

He warned that if they fail to comply, he will have no choice but to initiate legal proceedings to safeguard his reputation.
