The monster storm slammed into the sunshine state at around 8.30pm on Friday and has continued to wreak havoc along the coastline.

Trees have been ripped from their roots and cars hurled through the air in a weekend of weather hell.

One woman was crushed to death after a tree collapsed onto her home on Saturday morning, confirmed Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Her husband Joey Williams told NewsNation the pair had gne outside to take photos of the damage but when they went back inside the tree smashed through their roof and trapped them.

He said: “I was able to squeeze out. My wife didn’t make it.”

Another was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning after operating a generator indoors – with four others hospitalised in the same home.

At least 440,000 people were left without power in Florida on Saturday night as the hurricane knocked out power cables.

Florida Governor warned residents to “be careful out there”.

He said: “Downed power lines, standing water, any of that can be very, very hazardous.

“Don’t run any generators inside your home or inside your garage.”

In Birmingham, Alabama, a second woman was trapped under a tree and a further two people were killed in the storms.

Governor Kay Ivey said: “This storm brought in heavy winds throughout Alabama, taking down trees, knocking out power and doing some damage.”

On Friday a flying tree struck a deputy with the Dale County Sheriff’s Department on Friday – leaving him with minor injuries.

Terrifying video footage shows emergency responders speeding to a wrecked vehicle – before a rogue tree crushes the vehicle, striking the deputy.

Forecasters feared the hurricane would reach a Category 3 “danger” level – but it stayed at a lower level Category 2.

There remain major flash flooding and landslide risks, said the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The weather body warned that some areas could see up to 10 inches of rainfall, sparking floods and possible landslides.

Across the country, California has been ravaged by tropical Storm Rachel.

Waves towered to nine feet and crashed into homes along the West Coast including Malibu and San Diego, leaving a trail of destruction.
