Fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Milltown Street on Tuesday evening.
Eight fire engines and three specialist appliances from across the city were called in to tackle the blaze at around 7.15pm.
Locals living in the area have been advised to “close your windows and doors” due to a “large plume of smoke”.
Shocking photos show black smoke pouring into the sky as the inferno raged.
Crews have been pumping water from the nearby River Irwell to contain the flames.
One eyewitness also told Manchester Evening News that a “really large explosion” had occurred.
Both the police and ambulance service are also at the scene with a cordon put in place on Milltown Street.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 7.15pm today, eight fire engines and three specialist appliances from across Greater Manchester were called to a building fire on Milltown Street, Radcliffe.
“Crews arrived quickly and are using jets and turntable ladders to extinguish the fire.
“Residents are asked to avoid the area and close their windows and doors if they live nearby.”
The Sun has contacted Greater Manchester Police for comment.
