The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has claimed that his health has deteriorated while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Kanu asserted that his health has been compromised due to inconsistent, falsified, and at times negligent medical practices during his time in DSS custody.
The IPOB leader made these allegations in a formal letter and appeal directed to the President of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).
Dated September 29, 2025, the letter was titled: “Serious Concerns Regarding My Medical Treatment and Health Management in DSS Custody – Request for Urgent Intervention, Protection of Independent Practitioners, and Immediate Release of NMA Medical Assessment Report.”
He stated: “I, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, currently detained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja, write with a profound sense of urgency and seriousness to present to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) the true and detailed account of my medical plight.
“My health, already weakened by my violent abduction in Kenya, has been further compromised by inconsistent, falsified, and at times negligent medical practices within Nigeria.
“This letter aims not only to bring my condition to the formal attention of the NMA but also to invoke the ethical responsibilities of the medical profession in accordance with both Nigerian law and international human rights standards.”
The IPOB leader called on the NMA to investigate the manipulation of his medical records while in DSS custody.
He emphasized: “I specifically urge the NMA to: Investigate and address the manipulation of my medical records in DSS custody.
Protect independent practitioners, particularly Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, whose intervention has been lifesaving.
“Ensure the immediate release of the NMA medical team’s report dated September 22, 2025, which the Federal High Court has mandated must be filed within four days.
“Recognize and respond to the serious risks posed by untreated conditions, especially tinnitus-induced sleep deprivation, which continues to threaten my life.”
