The two prominent traditional monarchs in the Southwest, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade, have reconciled after a two-month disagreement.

The reconciliation took place during the 90th birthday celebration of business magnate Kensington Adebutu, widely known as ‘Baba Ijebu,’ in Lagos on Friday.

Following their meeting, both monarchs announced the establishment of a joint council aimed at promoting Yoruba unity.

In a joint communiqué issued by the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo, they stated that the council will work towards fostering peace, preserving culture, and encouraging socioeconomic development in the Southwest region.

The communiqué was signed by both monarchs, with Adebutu serving as a witness, and was released by Kola Oyefeso, the secretary of the communiqué drafting committee.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective history.

“We reaffirm our commitment to fostering harmony among all Yoruba people and upholding the sacred principles of mutual respect and brotherhood passed down by our ancestors.”

The disagreement between the two monarchs originated when the Ooni of Ife conferred the title of “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” on businessman Dotun Sanusi.

In response, the Alaafin demanded that the Ooni revoke the title within 48 hours, describing the situation as an “affront” and asserting his exclusive authority to grant titles throughout Yorubaland.
