A DOCTOR was stabbed in an A&E unit yesterday when a patient went berserk with a “big knife”.

The victim, in his 50s, was repeatedly attacked by a “smirking” assailant who had dragged him to the floor.

dealing with a separate incident in casualty hauled the man off the medic at about 2.40am.

The victim’s wounds were treated at Hillingdon Hospital, , after the attack there.

His condition was not “life-threatening or life-changing”, said police.

The suspect, 27, who is thought to have issues, was arrested on suspicion of .

A source said: “The doctor was very lucky police were there and managed to stop the attack, or it could have been fatal.

“The officers were real heroes.”

A witness in the unit said he saw the suspect attacking the doctor with a “big knife”.

He added: “He was smirking while he was stabbing him.

“The police were there in less than a minute. When they’d got him and walked him past me the bloke smiled at me.”

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We continue to support and reassure our staff following this incident.”
