A 100-metre cordon has been set up around College Avenue in Mutley today after officers carried out a warrant in the area.
A senior officer told PlymouthLive that properties within the 100-metre cordon are being asked to leave as a precaution while the item is assessed.
Detective Inspector Kev Morley said there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.
He said: “In the course of searches we’ve identified something we want to make safe and as a precaution EOD have recommended a 100m cordon.
“Our priority is the long-term and sustained protection of the public and we needed the item to be tested by a suitably trained person in EOD.
“At this point in time there is no wider threat to the public”.
Plymouth Highways said the cordon around College Avenue is expected to cause delays and that updates will be issued when available.
Connaught Avenue has also reportedly been closed, and a bomb disposal van has been spotted at the scene.
