Gwandu Emirate tussle: Kebbi govt reacts to Supreme Court judgment

Published on June 04, 2025 at 06:56 PM

The Kebbi State Government has congratulated the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, on his legal victory at the Supreme Court, which on Wednesday affirmed his position as the rightful traditional ruler of the Gwandu Emirate.

The apex court’s judgment marked the end of a 20-year legal tussle over the emirate’s throne following the removal of Al-Mustapha Haruna Jokolo in 2005.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Hon. Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, the state government described the verdict as the culmination of a prolonged dispute that had disrupted peace and stability within the emirate.

“The judgment has brought final closure to an impasse that has raised concerns and negatively impacted the harmony required for the emirate to function effectively,”; the statement read.

The government urged the Emir to be magnanimous in victory and to rally all members of the royal family towards peace and unity.

It also called on residents of the Gwandu Emirate to embrace the ruling as an opportunity for reconciliation and collective progress.

“The people should leverage the unprecedented development achieved under the administration of Governor Nasir Idris to drive further growth across the emirate,”; the statement added.
