Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has called on Institute if Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, to be resolute in pushing for and ensuring financial discipline in both private and public sectors in Nigeria.

Otu has also emphasized the critical role ICAN should play in promoting transparency, financial and ethical standards in government business.

He spoke when Accountant General of the state, Dr Glory Tony Effiong, was named as the 13th Chairman of the professional body in Calabar.

“As a government, we recognize and appreciate the role of ICAN in building a transparent and stable financial system in Nigeria. But we call on them to do more to ensure financial discipline in both government business and in the private sector,”; Otu said.

Represented by the Speaker of Speaker State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, the governor maintained that accountants are central to good governance.

Otu noted that partnerships with professional bodies are vital in strengthening institutional trust and service delivery.

He said his administration was revamping and remodelling the state’s financial system, a development which he said has led to increase in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“We’re cleaning up and making it more efficient and transparent,”; he stated.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to accountability under the People First agenda.

He congratulated Effiong on her new role, expressing confidence in her leadership capacity.
