The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adolphus Wabara, has stated that Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has lost the legitimacy to remain in office following his resignation from the party.
Wabara made this remark in response to Diri’s recent resignation from the PDP, during which he claimed to currently have no party affiliation.
The former Senate President emphasized that the Governor's actions are inconsistent with the Constitution of Nigeria.
He labeled the move as unconstitutional, asserting that Diri has disqualified himself from continuing in office after leaving the party whose mandate he was entrusted with.
He pointed out that the Nigerian Constitution does not currently provide for independent candidacy; thus, any elected official who abandons the party that brought him into power should also vacate the position he holds.
Wabara insisted that, at this moment, Bayelsa has no legitimate Governor. “There is no functioning government in Bayelsa State. There’s no democracy in Bayelsa State. Our constitution does not support independent candidacy.
“For a Governor to abandon the party that facilitated his rise to power and claim to be ‘partyless’ is unconstitutional. Remaining without a political platform is grounds for impeachment,” he stated.
