On Monday, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State presented an appropriation bill amounting to N605,506,704,066.16 for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly.
The governor reported that the 2025 budget of N550 billion had achieved a performance level of 73.2 percent as of November, totaling N402.691 billion.
While detailing the proposed 2026 appropriation bill, Governor Alia mentioned that N342.420 billion has been allocated for capital expenditure.
He indicated that the proposed recurrent expenditure is set at N281.086 billion.
Additionally, he noted that 3.68 percent of the capital budget has been designated for social protection initiatives.
During his presentation, Governor Alia explained that this 3.68 percent of the capital budget is intended to enhance targeted support for elderly citizens, individuals with disabilities, internally displaced persons, and extremely vulnerable households.
“We aim to reach at least 1,000 beneficiaries in each of the 276 wards to help reduce unemployment,” he remarked.
The governor also mentioned that upon taking office in 2023, his administration inherited debts amounting to N359.6 billion, which have since been reduced by N68.9 billion.
However, he acknowledged that the government anticipates challenges regarding the budget for the 2026 fiscal year.
According to DAILY POST, the appropriation bill is titled, “Budget of Rural Development, Livelihood Support and Sustained Growth.”
