GLORIOUS GOODWOOD winner Shayem has been sold to continue his career in Hong Kong.

Karl Burke’s progressive three-year-old holds an entry in Saturday’s Group 2 Celebration Mile at the Sussex racecourse.

But his owner, Abdulrazaq Mohamdi, recently received an offer which was too good to refuse, so the colt will soon head to the Far East before the start of the new season in Hong Kong.

Exciting Shayem was second in the German 2,000 Guineas in May and has won both of his starts since, including a defeat of the highly-touted Talk Of New York in the Thoroughbred Stakes.

He had been a general 6-1 shot for the Celebration Mile, with Charlie Appleby’s Distant Storm heading the market at 5-2, but he will not take up his entry.

Burke said: “He’s been sold, so he won’t be going to Goodwood. He’s a smashing horse and I’ve always thought he will improve next season as a four-year-old.

“It’s a real shame to lose him, but his owner received a very good offer from Hong Kong, and sadly, it’s the name of the game.”

Burke could run Boiling Point in the Celebration Mile instead, though he might be forced into a rethink if thunderstorms arrive and the going turns soft.

The North Yorkshire trainer is also considering future targets for top miler Zeus Olympios, who was only just touched off in the Prix Jacques le Marois earlier this month.

He said: “He came out of the race well and I’m very happy with him. We could go for the Prix du Moulin next weekend, though it might come a little soon.

“We’ll see what the craic is, how the field and the ground is shaping up, next week and then go from there.”
