A 17-year-old girl has tragically died following a horror crash, while a 19-year-old driver is fighting for his life in hospital.
Cops rushed to the scene at the northbound carriageway, at Seaton near the turn-off for Sunderland at around 11pm on Monday.
A yellow Vauxhall Corsa left the carriageway and was involved in a collision before catching fire, Northumbria Police said.
The 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old male driver was taken to hospital where he is in a critical condition.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact the force.
A section of the carriageway which was closed between the junctions for the B1404, close to Seaham, and the A690 Herrington Interchange, reopened around 9.50am.
Motorists faced lengthy delays, with National Highways working to clear up the scene with diversions in place.
