A GIANT lift in one of the UK’s most popular seaside resorts has been slated for looking like a “WW2 watch tower”.

Some local have described the 42ft-high lift that overlooks the English Channel as “a monstrosity”.

The iconic sealift is in the process of being repaired as part of a £750,000 revamp of the Victorian Madeira Terraces in .

Labour councillor David McGregor said the lift “looks brilliant” and shared images of the new design on social media.

He said: “Went down to check on the progress of the Madeira Terraces and lift works.

“It’s coming along incredibly well. The arches look amazing, the iron work has been done to such a fantastic standard.

“The lift looks brilliant and will be a key part of the city for so many.

“After decades of delays, it was this that finally started the work to revive this iconic structure and keep our seafront as accessible as possible.”

But the new design has split opinion among locals, with one resident writing: “The lift looks a bloody monstrosity really out of keeping.”

Another posted: “That lift is butt ugly and totally not in keeping with the terraces!” A third resident said: “Looks like a WW2 watch tower.”

Not everyone was disparaging, though, with one person writing: “I really like the design of the new lift and it is great that disabled and elderly people will be able to more easily access the .”

Another said: “Blimey the moaners are out in force. I think it looks great. Clean, simple, elegant, functional.”
