"Mark Your Calendars: GCSE Results Day for the UK in 2026!"

SIXTH form places, college courses and apprenticeships all hinge on a single summer morning’s results.

Here’s everything you need to know about and what happens next.

When is GCSE results day 2026?

In 2026, falls on Thursday, August 20, with those all-important grades released from 8am.

The Joint Council for Qualifications sets the date and it covers every exam board, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, and CCEA.

Entry-level certificates, foundation and higher projects and most Level 1 and 2 vocational technical qualifications come out the same morning.

There are exceptions – OCR’s Cambridge Technicals can be issued to students from Monday, August 10.

It’s worth remembering that 8am is the earliest time results can be released, not a fixed time.

Some hand out printed slips, others use online portals or email correspondence, so it’s a good idea to check what yours is doing.

across all three nations – England uses the 9 to 1 scale, Wales uses letter grades, and pupils in Northern Ireland can get both.

Can you challenge a GCSE grade?

Yes, but there are two separate processes and they run in order.

The first is a review of marking, which isn’t a fresh re-mark of the paper.

It checks whether the original mark scheme was applied correctly and corrects any marking or administrative errors that come to light.

If you are at a , the request has to come from them, so speak to your exams officer first.

If they refuse to ask for one, you must be given access to the centre’s internal appeals procedure to challenge that decision.

Private candidates can go directly to the exam board for a review or for a copy of a marked script.

Reviews can be requested from results day onwards, and the last date for exam boards to receive them is Thursday, September 24, 2026.

But a review can cause a mark to go down as well as up, which is why the student needs to give written consent, and there may be a fee if the grade doesn’t change.

An appeal is a separate step and only comes afterwards.

Once the exam board has issued the outcome of a clerical re-check, review of marking or review of moderation, you have 30 calendar days to appeal it.

When can you resit GCSEs?

English language and maths can be retaken in November 2026, with the results coming out in January 2027.

Those exams are open only to candidates who were 16 or over on August 31, 2026.

Most other subjects have to wait for the summer 2027 series.

Wales is the exception, where legacy Welsh Language has resit-only exams in November 2026.

In England, students who fall short in English or maths are usually required to keep studying the subject.

The rule applies to students aged 16 to 18 on study programmes and T Levels of at least 150 hours who did not get a Grade 4 or above (or an accepted equivalent) by the end of Year 11.

It also covers those aged 19 and over who are continuing a course, and students with special educational needs, who stay covered up to the age of 25.

Apprenticeships have their own rules.
