Gaza authorities report 100 killed in single day as Israel launches fresh offensive

Published on May 17, 2025 at 02:33 PM

At least 100 people were killed in Gaza on Friday as Israel intensified its military campaign under a renewed offensive dubbed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, according to Gaza health officials.

The latest escalation marks the deadliest day in recent weeks and comes amid what the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described as the “initial stages”;; of an expanded operation aimed at dismantling Hamas and securing the release of hostages still held in Gaza.

In an Arabic-language statement posted on Telegram, the IDF said, “The operation is part of the expansion of the battle in the Gaza Strip, with the goal of achieving all the war’s objectives, including the release of the abducted and the defeat of Hamas.”;;

A parallel English statement added that Israeli troops were being mobilized to “achieve operational control in areas of the Gaza Strip,”;; signaling a likely move toward broader territorial gains.

Since Israel resumed hostilities on March 18, after a two-month truce, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reports that 2,985 people have died, bringing the overall death toll in the conflict to 53,119 since October 2023.

According to Gaza’s civil defense agency, Friday’s Israeli airstrikes alone accounted for more than 100 fatalities, while the IDF confirmed it had targeted over 150 “terror targets”;; in the span of 24 hours.

The humanitarian toll continues to mount. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under increasing pressure — both domestically and globally — to ease a crippling blockade that has severely limited access to humanitarian aid. Aid agencies warn of severe shortages in food, clean water, fuel, and medical supplies.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the renewed offensive, cautioning that the combination of intensified military attacks and a sustained blockade may amount to an attempt at the “forcible displacement of Gaza’s civilian population.”;;

Friday’s developments follow a turbulent timeline that began on October 7, 2023, when a surprise Hamas assault killed 1,218 people in Israel, the majority of them civilians.

During the attack, 251 persons were taken hostage. According to Israeli military updates, 57 hostages remain in Gaza, with 34 presumed dead.
