The legend opted for his old team-mate at No1, ahead of in second in third.

Justifying his Gerrard selection, Carra said: “I knew his name and had heard he was a good player but I didn’t know much about him.

“But as soon as he came in you’re thinking wow – it was his pace and energy – he came in and took ‘s place.

“The strength about Stevie was he didn’t have a weakness, he could tick every box.

“When you think of the three roles in terms of a six, eight and a ten – he could play all those roles. Not many players on that list could play all three at very high level.”

Carragher, who was joined in the studio by Keane, went for the Irishman’s old sparring partner in fourth ahead of in fifth.

Two-time Prem champion came in sixth above seventh placed .

, who had been co-commentating on Manchester United’s , had Carragher’s selections put to him after the match while recording his Gary Neville Podcast .

The former full-back named five players rather ten, and had a very different order to Carragher’s – with Keane coming out on top.

Discussing his former team-mate, Neville gushed: “I’ve never seen anybody drive a team forward with the standards that he had.

“An incredible attacking player, similar traits to Vieira but I think a level up when it comes to goalscoring. He’s a good header of the ball in both boxes.

“He’s a good tackler, a great runner and quick, absolutely lightning quick but with power, a good full-back, a good one-on-one defender, a good man marker in the box.

“Someone who had the ability to compose himself in the final third, someone who could wrap passes through the lines into players like or or or in the pockets in the No10 positions and a great captain.

“I think if Jamie Carragher is selecting the No1 central midfield player in Premier League history you can’t choose anybody else but Roy Keane really and I don’t think many would.”

Neville, 51, began his top five with Rodri – claiming that if the star had been in the league longer he could have been even higher.

He then opted for Carragher’s No1 Gerrard at No4 – pointing to the fact that he had excelled as a No10 at times rather than in midfield as a contributing factor to him not being higher.

Neville had Paul Scholes third, calling him “the most beautiful football player, who controlled every single game for us”.

And just behind Keane in second, Neville had Vieira – praising the Frenchman as a “great tackler, runner, quick, couldn’t get the ball past him, couldn’t take him on one-on-one, would get across to anything”.
