GARY NEVILLE has sent a blunt warning to the Manchester United board over Michael Carrick – despite has sensational start as boss.

The caretaker boss has been virtually faultless with 16 points from a possible 18 with the only blip an away draw at

The surge up the table into major contenders and the results over the likes of and have got Carrick’s name firmly in the frame to get the job for keeps.

It’s a road have pursued in the past with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and while there is plenty of noise and clamour for the former midfielder to keep the reigns beyond the summer, Neville has issued caution.

He is NOT against getting the gig full-time and reckons he is in the box seat – but he believes his old club should “go for the best class of manager available”

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show ahead of United’s win over Everton, he explained: “I think Manchester United have to pursue another manager right now around the fact of you don’t know how the results are going to go.

“Little things like [Thomas] Tuchel re-signing with England does start to take away the options for Manchester United and they don’t harm Michael’s chances of getting the job.

“If he gets United into the Champions League there will be a lot of fever around that he should be appointed.

‘I’m not against him being appointed. I love him to bits and think that he’s done an incredible job so far. I just feel that Manchester United should go for the best class of manager available.

“They’ve had young and inexperienced managers in the last two picks which have not quite worked.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come in before as an ex-player, who did a very good job for a couple of years, but that didn’t work in the end.

“So I just feel removing as much risk as possible is the right option.

“But people who know me will know that’s not personal against Michael because I love him to bits. He’s a great lad, a great player and someone who’s doing a very good job as a coach now.”

The United legend and Sky Sports pundit reiterated his stance live on air ahead of his old club facing Crystal Palace.

Victory would see them leapfrog into third spot as they target Champions League football next term.

Carrick’s impact has surprised and he believes the former midfielder will be just as shocked as everybody else.

He knows he won’t get carried away and will take each game as it comes but he is now backing the Red Devils to secure a return to Europe’s top table.

He said: “Look, I am surprised where Michael has taken them from what we were seeing in and around Christmas time.

“The performance levels against Arsenal and City in those first two matches were incredible. I didn’t expect that at all. I don’t think anyone would have expected that.

“I think the run they have gone on has been a shock to everybody including probably Michael. He would not have been expecting this in his wildest dreams.

“He was always intelligent Michael and a real good personality and character. Good composure and temperament.

“What he has got to do now is keep it going until the end of the season. I think today is a big part of that.

“These game are the ones that can trip you up.

“Michael is in the box seat for the job and I think looking at what is happening now, I think they will qualify for the Champions League and he won’t get carried away week to week.”
