The Rivers State House of Assembly has denied reports circulating online that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, have been halted.
The Assembly clarified that the process is still active and is being carried out strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions.
This information was shared in a statement released on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Hon. Enemi George.
According to the statement, the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, continues to progress in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The lawmakers revealed that separate notices of allegations related to gross misconduct have been served to both the governor and his deputy in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution.
“The notices of allegations of gross misconduct against the Governor and the Deputy Governor have been properly forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, and the House is currently awaiting their responses,” the statement indicated.
The Assembly emphasized its constitutional duty to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no public office holder operates outside legal boundaries.
In response to claims suggesting that the impeachment process has been suspended, the House accused certain individuals and media outlets of intentionally spreading false information to mislead the public and create tension between the legislature and the residents of Rivers.
The lawmakers labeled such reports as untrue and asserted that they will not yield to intimidation, threats, or blackmail.
“We are aware of renewed efforts by certain individuals and media platforms to misinform the public by asserting that the impeachment process has been terminated. The public should dismiss such untruths, as the process is still ongoing,” the statement concluded.
The Assembly reiterated its dedication to democratic principles and constitutional duties, emphasizing that it will not be sidetracked by what it referred to as “cheap propaganda.”
It also expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their support and prayers during the current political developments and extended goodwill to Nigerians committed to the nation's democratic progress.
According to DAILY POST, during the plenary session on Thursday, presided over by the Speaker, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally presented the notice of allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara on the floor of the House.
