The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has designated all custodial facilities across the country as red zones in response to the 'Free Nnamdi Kanu' protest.

This announcement was made by NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

Umar explained that the notice aims to prevent unauthorized access to the facilities during the demonstration, emphasizing that correctional centres are restricted areas and urging the public to avoid them.

“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are classified as red zones. The NCoS reiterates that these facilities are restricted areas. Anyone without official business should refrain from entering to avoid any unfortunate incidents or security breaches,” he stated.

He also urged for collaboration with security agencies to maintain peace and safety throughout the protest.

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been held in custody by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.

Activist Omoyele Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, announced that a protest march to the presidential villa concerning Kanu’s ongoing detention is scheduled for October 20.

The protest is anticipated to occur around Eagle Square and the Central Business District.

The police authorities have also requested that groups planning demonstrations against the detention of the IPOB leader adhere to a court order that restricts protests in key government areas.

The Force has further warned that anyone who exploits protests as a pretext to commit violence, vandalize property, or incite unrest, whether physically or via social media, will be “dealt with decisively.”
