The goalkeeper also earned one cap for the French national team, featuring in a 0-0 draw against Ivory Coast in November 2016, and was part of the Les Bleus squad that lost in the final of Euro 2016.

In 2024, the Caen-born shot-stopper dismissed retirement after his contract with Salernitana came to an end.

He subsequently appeared in the French edition of the seven-a-side tournament, the Kings League.

Costil describes himself as someone who has never been drawn to the glamorous lifestyle associated with football.

Now, however, he finds himself in a fascinating new career as he has revived an oyster farm that had been dormant for two decades.

In an interview with L’Equipe , he shared: “I’m not creating a new life; I’m living mine the way I desire.

“I’ve never been interested in the glitz and glamour of football.

“I appreciate this connection with the sea, putting in the hard work, handling sales, working behind the bar, and even washing dishes when it gets hectic.

“I just need to learn how to shuck oysters more quickly!”

Alongside his friend Philippe Le Pelvé, he is often seen loading his boat with crates or stacking mesh bags.

He has already welcomed several former internationals to the farm to enjoy his oysters, including Yoann Gourcuff and Christophe Jallet.

Costil has been relishing a change of environment by playing for the Carnac veterans’ team in the Gulf of Morbihan.

His new team has also brought a new role, with Costil now playing as a wing-back instead of a goalkeeper.

Costil admits that he has lost his “competitive edge” and now plays more for the social experience.

He humorously claims he has “become more Breton than the Bretons themselves.”
