The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, remains dedicated to implementing the benefits of Nigeria’s new tax laws, despite a recent request for his dismissal, according to a civic group on Saturday.

Clement Kolawole, the spokesperson for the Guardian of Truth, stated in a press release on Saturday that Adedeji is committed to ensuring that the new tax laws provide significant relief for ordinary Nigerians and eliminate multiple taxes for businesses in the upcoming year.

Kolawole was responding to a lawmaker, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who called for the removal of the finance minister and the FIRS chairman due to alleged unpaid debts owed to various government contractors.

He characterized the call as absurd and rooted in a misunderstanding of the agency’s responsibilities.

According to him, “FIRS is not responsible for payments to contractors working for the government, as the agency solely assesses, collects, and accounts for tax revenue due to the federation.”

He emphasized that the agency’s impressive revenue performance should not be confused with retaining funds intended for government contractors.

“The fact that FIRS, under Adedeji’s leadership, has consistently achieved outstanding revenue collection results since taking office does not imply that the funds are being held by FIRS,” he stated.

Kolawole reminded the lawmaker that a significant portion of the funds distributed monthly by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) originates from FIRS collections.
