Priced at just £59, Thomson streaming boxes were an affordable option to a Fire TV Stick for Android devices.

They are now no longer available for purchase as the company responsible for making the devices has filed for bankruptcy.

StreamView, which sold TVs and streaming boxes under the Thomson name, confirmed via Austria’s Alpine Creditor’s Association that it was filing for , with the brand in €36.6 million in debt.

The Austrian-based firm is also reportedly exposed to supply chain problems with its manufacturers in China and at this time, has no plans to continue operations.

StreamView had been selling Google TV streaming devices since 2024, after licensing the Thomson name from its parent company, Established Inc.

The Thomson Streaming Box Plus 270, in particular, had become a budget-friendly alternative to a Fire TV Stick.

The Google TV product was especially popular for sideloading – a way Android users could install apps from outside the Google Play store.

For those who currently own a Thomson device, don’t worry – your device will still work.

The device, along with Google TV, runs independently to StreamView, so they will continue to operate as normal.

The main issue is after-care support, as you will no longer be able to contact StreamView for help with your device.

Established Inc has confirmed that it is committed to ensuring after-sale services for its customers while it searches for a new partner.

Following the news of the bankruptcy, the company said: “StreamView GmbH, Thomson’s partner for televisions in Europe, has announced that it has filed for insolvency.

“Established, owner of the Thomson brand, would like to reassure StreamView’s end-consumers that all efforts are being made to ensure continuity of after-sale services and client satisfaction while the group is identifying a new trust partner for Europe.”

One of the main issues for consumers following the bankruptcy is related to the issue of sideloading, particularly after recent announcements from Amazon revealed that updates to their device will no longer permit the installation of apps from unofficial stores.

Fire TV Sticks were previously created on Android software, but it was recently reported that new models will be built on Linux and run Vega OS.

Fire TV Sticks built on the Android software allowed users to sideload, meaning they could install apps outside of the Amazon store.

These new models will not support sideloading, meaning anyone purchasing a Fire TV Stick running Vega OS can no longer install the extra apps.

For customers looking to sideload, Google TV devices were a popular solution as the device runs on Android which supports sideloading.

With the departure of the Thomson streaming devices from the market, shoppers are faced with a smaller pool of affordable options that can allow the installation of apps outside the main store.
