The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed that a fire incident destroyed 529 temporary stalls at Shuwaki Market in the Gari Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, verified the event to reporters in Kano.
According to Saminu, the agency received an emergency call at approximately 3:25 p.m. from Abdulmalik Muhammad of the Gari Fire Station, notifying them of a fire outbreak at the market.
He noted that upon receiving the alert, the Kano Fire Service promptly dispatched personnel and fire-fighting vehicles to the location to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market.
The Public Relations Officer emphasized that the market area, which spans about 3,000 by 2,500 feet and houses approximately 1,000 temporary stalls, experienced significant damage, with 529 stalls completely destroyed.
Saminu confirmed, however, that there were no casualties resulting from the incident.
He attributed the cause of the fire to the actions of some intoxicated individuals residing within the market premises.
The FIRE SERVICE spokesperson urged residents and traders to exercise caution when handling fire and flammable materials to prevent loss of life and property.
