The Federal Government has approved the construction of a N1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, a major infrastructure project expected to transform urban transportation and stimulate economic growth in the state.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, disclosed the approval on Wednesday while addressing members of the Kano contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.

The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Wednesday.

According to the governor, the rail project is designed to provide a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system that will link key districts within the Kano metropolis, ease traffic congestion and enhance mobility for residents.

Governor Yusuf said the project underscores his administration’s recent political realignment with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that the move was motivated by the need to attract critical development projects to Kano.

He described the Kano Metropolitan Rail Service as a landmark intervention that would significantly improve the quality of life of residents and reposition Kano as a major transportation and commercial hub in northern Nigeria.

The governor assured that the state government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation of the project, transparency in execution, and maximum benefits for the people of Kano State.

He also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to complement federal initiatives through supportive policies and infrastructure development.
