The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has successfully rescued multiple children from an orphanage located in Kagini, within the Bwari Area Council, due to concerns regarding their welfare and alleged irregularities in the adoption process.

As stated in a release made on Tuesday and covered by the National Television Authority (NTA), the rescue mission was executed by the FCT Department of Child Development in partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), along with various security and social welfare organizations.

The statement indicated that this operation signifies the commencement of a more rigorous rescue and monitoring initiative aimed at adopted children within the FCT, some of whom were reportedly brought in from Benue State.

“Some of the rescued children have been identified and are now under protective custody, while plans are being established to guarantee their safety, medical care, and psychological support,” the statement remarked.

This intervention was prompted by weeks of discreet investigations carried out by the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, led by the Director of Child Development, Dr. Idris Attah, regarding the operations of the orphanage and the wellbeing of the children.

Authorities disclosed that the owner of the orphanage fled shortly before officials arrived at the site.

“Upon arrival, officials found that the owner had absconded just hours earlier, leaving the facility unattended.”

“Her disappearance is believed to be linked to the ongoing investigation and potential breaches of adoption and child protection laws,” the statement added.

The FCTA reiterated its dedication to upholding the Child Rights Act and reforming the adoption process, cautioning that anyone found guilty will face legal action.

Investigations are ongoing as security agencies amplify their efforts to locate the suspect and uncover the complete extent of the orphanage's operations.
