Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has hinted on sealing properties whose owners are defaulting in the payment of ground rent.

Wike said he had given those owing ample time to sort out their debt.

The non-payment of ground rent by some land owners led to the sealing of properties by the FCT Administration, FCTA, in May.

Some of the defaulting properties have been owning ground rent for the past 10 to 43 years.

Following the sealing up of default properties, President Bola Tinubu intervened and gave those owing 14 days to sort out their debt.

However, speaking on Friday in Abuja, Wike said he has given defaulters enough time to settle their debt.

The Minister declared that the FCTA is in dire need of funds to carry out more development projects in the FCT.

According to Wike: “We have allowed so much time. Initially, we gave two weeks. It has passed one month, two months, three months.

“You know how Nigerians are; if you don’t take steps, nothing will happen.

“So, for all those owing, from the ones we have published up to 2025, you have to provide the list so that we can commence immediate implementation.”

He also charged the directors of land, Abuja geographic information system, development control, and urban and regional planning to “work tirelessly” to ensure implementation.
