Professor Uma Kalu Oke, an expert in Animal Genetics and Breeding, has stated that the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Tinubu on July 9, 2024, has not addressed the animal protein crisis facing the nation.

He also advocated for the unbundling of the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) located in Zaria, Kaduna State, and the creation of a research center in the South East dedicated to the development of local animal species.

Professor Oke made these remarks on Wednesday during the 66th Inaugural Lecture at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

He asserted that while the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is a commendable initiative, it cannot fulfill the President's objective of ensuring the availability of quality protein without collaboration among farmers, researchers, the University of Agriculture, and the Federal government.

“The objectives behind the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock can only be realized through collaboration between farmers, researchers, the university, and the government,” he emphasized.

“NAPRI, being the sole animal research institute, should be restructured to facilitate the development of various animal species.”

“This restructuring could enable the establishment of poultry or piggery research institutes in the South East, along with funding for breeding research,” he added.

He highlighted the development of indigenous animal species as a solution to the quality protein crisis in the country.

Professor Oke also dismissed concerns from medical professionals regarding excessive consumption of animal protein in Nigeria, arguing that Nigerians have not even reached the recommended levels set by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, expressed concern that many Nigerians can no longer afford quality chicken due to financial constraints.
