His family have now confirmed his shock passing as tributes poured in for the former Lyon and Sunderland star.

Reports from Le Parisien claim he was secretly battling pancreatic cancer for three-and-a-half years.

Roy’s old side Lyon were one of the first clubs to pay tribute.

They wrote on X: “Olympique Lyonnais has learned, with great sorrow, of the death of Eric Roy, an elegant and cherished midfielder for OL from 1993/1996 (128 matches).

“To his family and loved ones, we extend all our condolences. Tribute to follow.”

Brest’s Ligue 1 rivals Lens also offered their condolences on social media.

The club said: “Racing Club de Lens has learned with deep sadness of the passing of Eric Roy, a figure of French football, a recognized technician, and a man of values.

“Former sports manager of RC Lens between 2017 and 2019, he left his mark on Racing through his commitment, his attachment to the club, and his human qualities.

“In mourning, Racing Club de Lens extends its most sincere condolences to his family, his loved ones, as well as to the entire @SB29.”
