EPL: Nwaneri to get new shirt number at Arsenal

Published on May 15, 2025 at 08:06 AM

Arsenal midfielder, Ethan Nwaneri, is set to be given a new shirt number after his breakout season.

The 18-year-old will be rewarded for an impressive campaign with the Gunners.

Goal reports that Nwaneri, who currently wears the No.53, will inherit the No.22 shirt, which will be vacated by goalkeeper David Raya.

Rayajoined Arsenal on loan from Brentford, before the transfer was made permanent last year. He has worn the 22 jersey during his first season at the Emirates.

However, the Spaniard is now set to take on the traditional No.1 shirt, which reflects his status as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper.

This number reshuffling provides Nwaneri with a more prominent squad number, often associated with established first-team players, and signifies his transition from academy prospect to key squad member.

Nwaneri was promoted permanently to the first-team setup alongside close friend and fellow academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly prior to the 2024–25 campaign.

He has since scored nine goals and provided two assists across all competitions so far this season.
