EPL: Carney hails Gibbs-White over goal celebration for Awoniyi

Published on May 19, 2025 at 11:37 AM

England’s Lionesses legend, Karen Carney, has hailed Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White for paying tribute to sick teammate Taiwo Awoniyi.

The England star remembered the Nigeria international during Nottingham Forest’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League.

Gibbs-White put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, capitalising on an error by West Ham goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola.

Gibbs-White lifted a shirt dedicated to Awoniyi after scoring the goal as the player recovers from a serious abdominal injury.

Awoniyi was a few days ago placed in an induced coma after he suffered a ruptured bowel during the Premier League clash with Leicester City.

The Super Eagles star had collided with the goalpost headfirst, after coming off the bench during the Premier League game.

The striker was rushed to the hospital after the incident, he underwent two emergency surgeries before he came out of coma on Wednesday.

Gibbs-White’s gesture drew admiration, with Carney, who was on punditry duties on Premier League Productions, commending the player.

“It’s a shocking decision from the goalkeeper,”;; Carney noted.

“Like Stuart said there, Gibbs-White isn’t going to miss. And a nice celebration for Awoniyi — hopefully he’s on the recovery as well.”;;

Forest doubled their lead just past the hour mark as Nikola Milenkovic headed home following a lengthy VAR check.

Nottingham Forest are seventh in the Premier League table, level with sixth-placed Manchester City and just one point behind Aston Villa.
