REAL MADRID have sensationally claimed they do not want to buy Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez in a shock public statement.

The Spanish club have reportedly been in talks to sign him this summer – with agent Javier Pastore only saying on Thursday that Madrid liked him.

But a statement from Los Blancos denies all claims and says that they will not be completing a transfer.

They wrote on Friday morning: “In light of the reports and statements that have appeared in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid CF in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any effort, either direct or indirect, to sign the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.

“Precisely because of the respect that an entity like Chelsea FC deserves and because of the principles of institutional loyalty that have always governed the actions of Real Madrid, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and do not correspond to reality.

“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the lack of any action on the part of the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and that only contributes to generating confusion among fans and unnecessarily harming the entities and people involved.”

Pastore had said just 24 hours earlier: “Real Madrid has been linked with him.

“Real Madrid likes the best players, and Enzo has been one of the best this year.

“He’s a player Real Madrid likes, and he likes Real Madrid, as well as other clubs in the league. Now we just have to wait a little while.”

Fernandez, who is away with Argentina at the World Cup, has been widely touted as a serious target for Madrid for months.

Earlier this year he expressed his love for the city and openly cast doubt over his Chelsea future in several interviews.

He appeared to wave goodbye to Chelsea fans after the final day of last season.

Chelsea value him at £120million and are not desperate to sell despite his decision to flirt with Real.

New manager Jose Mourinho is thought to be a big fan and pushing internally for a move.

As Madrid go through a summer of transition, they have not ruled out selling midfielders Eduardo Camavinga or Aurelien Tchouameni with Fernandez viewed as a potential replacement.

Fernandez is yet to meet with new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, who officially started his role on July 1.

Meanwhile, the Blues are exploring their own options in the middle of the park and have had a bid rejected for Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka, who thrived under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
