The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday urged Nigerians to disregard the unnecessary drama, misinformation, and politically motivated hysteria surrounding the recent directive regarding the withdrawal of police escorts from Very Important Personalities (VIPs).
According to Seye Oladejo, the spokesman for the state chapter of the APC, the issue has been exaggerated by the opposition, who thrive on sensationalism rather than thoughtful reflection.
In a signed statement, Oladejo asserted that the reality is straightforward, transparent, and indisputable: “This policy is neither new nor aimed at any specific individual or group. It is a standard administrative measure designed to restore professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force and reinforce the primary duty of the police, which is to protect the general population, not just a privileged few.
“For years, stakeholders and security experts have expressed concern over the disproportionate deployment of police personnel, where thousands of officers, who should be safeguarding communities, infrastructure, and public spaces, were instead assigned to private individuals as status symbols. Thus, this reform is a long-overdue correction, not a controversy.”
Oladejo lamented the unfortunate attempts by opposition figures, who are desperate for relevance, to exploit the issue by spinning false narratives to mislead the public.
He added: “Their loud complaints reveal a mindset that views public institutions as personal property. Nigeria cannot continue to finance insecurity at the national level while catering to the sensitivities of VIPs.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police deserve praise, not criticism, for advocating a reform that prioritizes the safety of millions of ordinary Nigerians.
“The Lagos APC fully supports any policy that enhances national security, improves community policing, and reinstates discipline within the security framework.
“We also want to assure the public that this decision does not impact the constitutionally mandated security details for public officials or those entitled to official protection by law. It simply limits the misuse, excesses, and unnecessary deployment of police officers to private events.
“In the coming days, we expect further policy adjustments in the security sector as Nigeria progresses toward a safer, more efficient, and more accountable policing system. Those attempting to politicize this reform should be reminded that the era of impunity has ended.
“In conclusion, the alleged outrage is unwarranted, the fear-mongering is unfounded, and the efforts to politicize this matter are futile. This is a positive move toward reviving national security, nothing more, nothing less.”
