The Fulani community in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has called for an end to what they refer to as unprovoked assaults on herdsmen by local residents, who are also killing their cattle.
This warning was issued in a statement signed by the group's Secretary, Abdullahi Yusuf, who urged for a halt to these unprovoked and coordinated attacks on Fulani herders to prevent retaliatory actions that often lead to significant bloodshed.
In the statement titled “Another Attack on Fulani Herders in Riyom,” Yusuf recounted how some Berom youths assaulted a Fulani herdsman, causing severe, life-threatening injuries while also killing one of his cows and injuring several others.
“The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government Area would like to bring to the public's attention yet another unprovoked attack on our people,” Yusuf stated.
“At approximately 4 PM on Thursday, October 2, 2025, suspected Berom youths attacked a Fulani herder, Aliyu Sale Shehu, near the Rim community in Rim Ward, Riyom LGA, Plateau State, leaving him with gunshot wounds.
“During the same incident, one cow was killed, and eight others were wounded by gunfire,” he added.
Yusuf emphasized that this unprovoked attack is just one of many assaults on Fulani herders in Riyom, while their means of livelihood are being systematically destroyed.
Continuing, the statement remarked:
“They will ruthlessly attack our people, and if any of the affected herders choose to retaliate, they will be labeled as bandits and aggressors.
“Since the attack on Sale, there has been no statement, no action, and no justice from government officials or community leaders. This silence only encourages the attackers and exacerbates the suffering of innocent Fulani herders.
“We urgently request intervention from security agencies and implore the Plateau State Government to speak out and take action before these unprovoked aggressions plunge the area into deeper turmoil.”
“The Fulani are equal citizens of Riyom and Plateau State, and our lives and properties must be safeguarded. Enough is enough,” he reiterated.
