Commissioner of Police on Elections, Yomi Shogunle, says a report by YIAGA Africa did not draw parallels between voter apathy and violence.
Shogunle made this statement on Monday in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’ monitored by DAILY POST.
Yiaga Africa had reported that there are widespread fears of insecurity and electoral violence in the North-West and North-East during the 2023 election, noting that the development affected the turnout of voters.
However, Shogunle disagreed, saying the report did not prove a connection between voter apathy and violence.
Shogunle said, “I was actually present at the presentation of this report in Abuja last week, and I’ve read through the report, and let me state here that it is more of perception than reality.
“Anywhere there’s human interaction, there’s always a need to up the game on provision of security. And in this report, there is nowhere that it has been drawn that the low participation has any security issues.
“So I think we just have to be careful when we try to link things together. And having said that, the Nigerian Police Force is the lead security agency on election. Security is putting in everything that is needed to be put in place to ensure that there is adequate provision of security during election.
“For instance, I will state that the Nigerian Police Force is putting all its strength out to provide adequate security during election. A lot is being done regarding training of police officers to be able to provide the required security needed for the election.
“A lot is being done, as well as acquiring the logistics needed for the provision of security during election.”
