The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three individuals in Maiduguri, Borno State, over the alleged mutilation of the Nigerian currency.
The suspects, identified as Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad and Bashir Musa, were apprehended by operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate following the circulation of a viral video on social media.
In the video, the trio were allegedly seen using a N500 note to wipe mucus from their noses, an act considered an abuse of the national currency under existing financial regulations.
In a post on its verified Facebook page, the commission said the suspects were traced and arrested within the Maiduguri metropolis after the video attracted public attention.
The EFCC confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.
Officials said the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations, in line with laws prohibiting the mutilation and improper handling of the naira.
