The Edo State Government announced on Sunday the hiring of 4,500 teachers to enhance the state's education sector.
According to DAILY POST, this initiative follows the regularization of the appointment of 4,000 EdoStar teachers as permanent staff, along with the recruitment of 500 new teachers.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, shared this information during his address in Benin City at the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, which was themed ‘Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession’.
He stated that the distribution of appointment letters to the new teachers would begin this month.
The commissioner emphasized that this decision reflects Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to recognizing dedication and addressing teacher shortages, particularly in public primary and secondary schools.
Iyamu also revealed that the state has constructed over 68 schools in less than a year and has trained more than 6,000 teachers in digital and technical skills.
He mentioned that the teachers received training in robotics and artificial intelligence to enhance classroom instruction.
“On October 15, we will present appointment letters to approximately 4,000 EdoStar volunteer teachers who have been teaching for the past three years. In addition to the EdoStar program, the government will recruit another 500 teachers to join the system.
“These initiatives will put an end to the lengthy probation period for volunteer teachers and help close the manpower gap in schools across the state.
“Even an apprentice does not train for three years without confirmation. The teachers will receive their appointment letters at a public ceremony in the Government House,” he stated.
The commissioner also mentioned that starting in 2026, the state government will institutionalize October 4 as Teachers’ Fitness Day to promote the well-being of educators.
“Building schools without teachers results in empty buildings. We are investing in individuals who will shape our children’s future,” he concluded.
