A MAJOR UK motorway has ground to a halt amid a police led incident – sparking Easter holiday traffic chaos.
The M61 in Greater has been fully closed southbound between Junction 5, Westhoughton/Bolton and Junction 4, A6.
Traffic has also been stopped Northbound between Junction 4 and Junction 5.
Emergency services have been scrambled to the scene and are working to reopen the road.
National Highways warned the road was closed following a “ led incident.”
Long queues of traffic have begun to build along the busy road as drivers battle congestion.
National Highways said: “The M61 in Greater is closed southbound between J5 (Westhoughton/Bolton) & J4 (A6) due to a Police led incident.
“Traffic is stopped northbound between J4 & J5. Emergency services are in attendance.
“More information to follow. Thank you for your patience.”
