Lord Cashman portrayed Dot’s pal Colin Russell on-screen, and returned to the soap briefly in 2022 for her character’s funeral.

He is now a member of the House Of Lords after a lengthy political career.

And talking during Friday’s House of Lords debate on assisted dying, the former Labour politician revealed that June had spoken to him about the topic before she passed.

He said during the debate: “I also remember my dear friend June Brown, who implored me to get her to a country where she could die with dignity and the death that she wanted.”

Lord Cashman has spoken in the past about helping a friend with the prospect of assisted dying, but didn’t name who it was.

At the time, he said: “When my dear friend of many, many years suffered for months, she knew there was another way and she implored me to help her, my lords, I did.

“I was prepared to break the law as I contacted clinics in the Netherlands and Switzerland.

“However, it was to come to nothing.”

Back in February, we revealed that

In a nod to her character, the canteen at the studios where the show is filmed has been named On The Dot.

A show insider said: “Naming the canteen after was something she would no doubt have approved of, and she would have seen the funny side of it.

“Plus it was always a place where, over many fags and cups of tea, she could be found holding court with several of her adoring cast members hanging off her every words.”

Her TV son – recalled how she was a regular at the canteen, even if it did take her a while to get there because she was so well loved.

He recalled: “We’d walk to the canteen at the BBC and it would always take about half an hour because she’d stop along the way chatting to people.”
