EASTENDERS has eliminated a cherished character in tonight’s Christmas episode – following a surprising return.

The soap’s first of two specials aired this evening and featured Zoe Slater discovering that both of her children survived the birth – and are out there.

Viewers are aware that Zoe has been using her daughter Jasmine to achieve her goals.

However, tonight, neither of them was the body found in the Queen Vic.

Instead, Zoe confronted Anthony about the stalking, unaware that he wasn’t responsible – and the situation escalated into violence.

Disgusted by his deceit, Zoe realized that Anthony hadn’t written the card from her son – leading her to believe he was on his way.

When Anthony insisted that she couldn’t keep him away from their son, Zoe snapped: “My son. He’s not coming for you; he’s coming for me.”

Anthony pleaded: “Don’t do this, Zoe. This is our chance; we can build our family and get to know our children together. It’s what we both desire, what we both need. It’s a second chance.”

“You’ve lost it,” Zoe screamed.

“I don’t want to do this with you; I don’t want anything to do with you ever again. What you told Kat about my kids is revolting. Get out. I want you gone.”

Anthony retaliated with threats, but Zoe fired back, warning him that nothing would come between her and her children.

As he threatened her again, she pushed him into a door frame, causing him to hit his head.

In retaliation, he grabbed her and slammed her head onto the bannister, rendering her unconscious.

Later, Kat went upstairs and found Zoe still out cold – and Anthony dead.

“Zoe, look at me,” she urged before asking: “What have you done? What have you done? He’s dead.”

Anthony’s lifeless body lay on the floor – but did Zoe really kill him? And what will Chrissie do when she arrives at the Vic?

Earlier in the episode, she was caught lurking by Sam Mitchell – but she insisted she was just passing through and wanted no drama.

Meanwhile, Cindy Beale found herself inviting her arch-enemy Max Branning in for drinks and possibly more – with neither realizing who the other was.

Actor returned earlier this year after first appearing on the soap in 2000.
