It’s kicking off in Walford and for once, the most explosive drama isn’t happening inside the walls of the Queen Vic.

A bitter mutiny is brewing behind the scenes of the nation’s favourite soap, with currently facing one of the biggest crises in its four-decade history – and the finger of blame is being firmly pointed in one direction.

Such is the discontent behind the scenes that five of its biggest stars have being left “fuming” at the way their characters were being handled.

Now there are whispers of a desperate “gagging order” threatening to overshadow tomorrow’s glittering National Television Awards.

At the centre of the storm is the relatively new executive producer Ben Wadey, who took the reins from much-loved boss Chris Clenshaw in June 2025, after previously working on Channel 4’s .

Since Wadey took charge of Albert Square, viewers and insiders alike have complained of a show that is rapidly losing its identity, and now, the cracks are showing.

Over the past few months, fans have been left reeling by a jaw-dropping string of high-profile exits all revealed in .

The most devastating blow came in August when announced she was quitting her iconic role as Linda Carter after 13 incredible years.

While Bright claimed the decision was hers, the timing has raised eyebrows among the cast.

Fans have been left baffled by Linda’s recent storyline which saw her professing her love for Max Branning – a move viewers slammed as completely out of character.

Our EastEnders mole has told how Kellie’s frustration triggered her exit, as under-fire Wadey focused on other characters.

The actress had a healthy relationship with former boss Chris, who convinced her to stay after on-screen husband Nick Carter, played by , quit the show three years ago.

He promised to ensure Linda would be at the forefront of some hard-hitting storylines – including killing Keanu Taylor in 2023 – and recast her mum Elaine and son Johnny to help keep her at the forefront of the soap.

But according to sources Bright, 50, has been left unhappy that Linda has been overlooked, which sparked her decision to exit.

Our mole told me: “Kellie’s exit stunned her co-stars as they anticipated her being a soap lifer.

“Her character is such a staple on Albert Square and the Carters had the potential to become as big as the Beales or the Mitchells with her at the forefront.

“The Carters have been a major victim in Wadey’s obsession with turning back the clock to the early noughties.

“It’s a shame as despite Danny leaving, they were starting to develop a real legacy, and Kellie was a huge part of that.

“But she didn’t want Linda to become a background character and that’s essentially what she’s become.”

But Linda isn’t the only one packing her bags. The soap is haemorrhaging top-tier talent. Viewers were delighted when Michelle Ryan made a sensational return as Zoe Slater last year, after twenty years away from the square, but the joy was short-lived.

After being saddled with a messy and critically panned stalker storyline, Ryan, 42, is bowing out again and this time, the iconic Zoe is to be killed off permanently.

Add to this the shocking departures of Aaron Thiara as the brooding Ravi Gulati, Charlie Suff as Johnny Carter, and Pierre Counihan-Moullier, who only recently arrived as Oscar Branning, and you have a show that feels like it’s losing its brightest stars.

Counihan-Moullier, 26, brought in to play Max’s son Oscar, was viewed as the future of the show, yet he is already walking out the door.

So, what exactly is going wrong in E20? According to one insider, some of the cast are at breaking point over the direction of the soap.

“There is real anger on set right now. It feels like the show is falling apart,” our Walford insider reveals.

“The pacing is completely frantic. Ben rushes through major storylines before they even have a chance to breathe. And there’s this blatant favouritism going on.

“All the focus goes onto shiny new characters, or the returning faces he’s brought back, while the loyal, established cast are pushed to the sidelines.”

The insider continued: “The writing has been all over the place. It feels like half the current cast have had personality transplants.

“Characters are making decisions they would never make just to fit a rushed plot.

“Many are worried about the future of the show. Top brass are bracing themselves for even more resignations and there is talk of lovebombing those on the ‘at risk’ list.”

The discontent has reached such a fever pitch that some of the departing cast members, and many of those still on the payroll, are openly pining for the good old days.

“People are desperately longing for Chris Clenshaw to return,” another source whispers.

“Chris understood the fabric of the show. He respected the history of the characters. Right now, it feels like that history is just being rewritten or ignored entirely.”

One Clenshaw loyalist also says that unnecessary bad blood has been made by excluding the former boss from recent awards triumphs, which he is credited for after overseeing the 40th anniversary episode.

It is alleged that when EastEnders won Best Soap at the Royal Television Society awards in March, Clenshaw was not invited to accept the award with the EastEnders team despite being in the room.

But the real flashpoint is set to come this Tuesday evening at the National Television Awards.

Normally, the NTAs are the highlight of the soap calendar – a night for the cast to let their hair down and celebrate their hard work.

But this year, the is being viewed as a massive PR landmine by terrified BBC bosses.

We can reveal that top brass at the Beeb are petrified that disgruntled actors will say the wrong thing on the red carpet press line.

“Management are worried about the NTAs,” a source said. “They know the press will be waiting to pounce, asking questions about all the exits and the unrest behind the scenes.

“The cast has basically been slapped with a gagging order. They’ve been told not to answer any questions about Ben or the state of the show, except in the most glowing of terms. They are expected to smile, toe the party line, and pretend everything is rosy in Walford.”

But the cast aren’t taking it lying down. Many of the soap’s biggest names have declined their invitations to the glittering ceremony.

Of the cast members who are attending, several have informed bosses that they will refuse to take questions from journalists.

“It’s unprecedented,” our insider adds. “Usually, everyone is fighting for a ticket to the NTAs.”

As Tuesday approaches, the tension at Elstree Studios is palpable.

With the Carter dynasty crumbling, the Slaters being decimated, and the Panesars losing their leading man, EastEnders is facing a precarious future.

One thing is for sure, the cameras might stop rolling, but the drama in Walford never sleeps.
