An officer can be seen pointing his weapon towards the struggle as the man fights his way towards the water’s edge before briefly escaping.

The suspect was trying to evade after being stopped on suspicion of impaired .

The incident unfolded on Sunday after Louisiana State Police received reports of a vehicle being driven recklessly on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in Jefferson Parish.

According to officials, the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier and suffered a burst tyre.

Troopers later located the car travelling southbound and carried out a traffic stop, identifying the driver as 40-year-old Victor Rivas.

Police said they observed signs of impairment while speaking with Rivas.

Moments later, he fled on foot, leaping from the elevated section of the interstate into the swamp below.

Troopers launched a search and later spotted Rivas walking along Highway 61.

When officers moved in to arrest him, he fled again – this time disappearing into another swampy area.

Rivas was then attacked by an alligator but continued to flee despite injuries to both arms.

Authorities eventually deployed a drone, which pinpointed his location.

He was taken into custody and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After being discharged, Rivas was taken to the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on charges including operating a vehicle while impaired and resisting arrest.

He also faces hit-and-run and careless operation charges linked to the earlier crash in Jefferson Parish.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office later offered a bizarre account of the arrest, joking that the alligator “was not injured and has since returned to its regular patrol of the swamp”.

The department also released an AI image showing an alligator in uniform receiving a “Deputy of the Year” award.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office warned: “Don’t drive impaired, don’t run from deputies, and definitely don’t hide in Louisiana swamps.

“Wildlife may just be cooperating with enforcement.”
