The Adamawa State Command of the Nigeria Police has cautioned drivers not to exceed a speed of 50 kilometers per hour on city streets.

The command, reminding motorists that the maximum allowable speed on highways is 100 kilometers per hour, emphasized that these limits will be strictly enforced, and offenders will face consequences.

This statement from the command, released in an advisory on Saturday morning, followed a road accident in the state capital that was attributed to what the police termed reckless racing by the involved motorists.

“Yesterday, around 7:00 PM, while traveling towards Unity Flyover from Bekaji Flyover, I witnessed a serious traffic accident at the Bekaji Underpass, involving two young men driving separate Mercedes-Benz vehicles,” said the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, reflecting on his observation.

According to Nguroje, “Eyewitnesses indicated that the incident was caused by illegal racing and reckless driving, resulting in a violent collision. The vehicles sustained significant damage, government-installed street lights were destroyed, and the occupants of the vehicles were injured.”

In the Traffic Safety Advisory, which bears his signature, Nguroje stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, strongly advises all motorists against reckless driving, speeding, and road racing, especially in urban areas where such behavior poses a serious risk to lives and public infrastructure.

Reiterating the approved speed limits of 50 km/h in urban/metropolitan areas and 100 km/h on expressways, Nguroje concluded that exceeding these limits will lead to strict enforcement and legal repercussions.

“The Command urges all motorists to exercise patience and refrain from engaging in dangerous competition on public roads,” he added.
