Police were called to a convenience store after receiving a report that a person had been shot – with the culprit being a black labrador.
Upon arrival they found a parked truck with major blast damage in one of its doors.
In the back seat, the animal had been left to its own devices – next to the loaded shotgun, KNOP reported.
As the pup bounced from one side of its back seat to another, it somehow managed to pull the trigger.
A woman who had stopped nearby at a traffic light was struck in her right arm by a rogue pellet.
Miraculously, her wounds were not life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.
Police said the incident was initially reported as involving a BB gun, but responding officers were later informed that it involved a shotgun.
The Scottsbluff Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident.
In Nebraska, it is illegal to drive or travel on a public highway with a loaded shotgun in or on any vehicle.
Violating this is typically a Class III misdemeanor, carrying a minimum fine of $50.
Somehow, this is not an entirely unique incident – and dogs seem to enjoy playing with weapons.
In November last year, a Pennsylvania man was shot in the back by his own dog that had “jumped onto the bed and set the gun off.”
The victim told police that before the incident, he was cleaning his firearm and had placed it on his bed, officials said.
He then proceeded to sit down on the bed, “at which time one of his dogs jumped onto the bed.”
This caused the weapon to fire a round into the man’s lower back, officials said.
