A 17-year-old boy died after he was buried alive in a hole in the sand.

The walls of a sand tunnel collapsed and suffocated Riccardo Boni on a beach north of Rome – as his distraught family struggled to reach him.

When the teen went missing, it took 40 minutes for family members to find him, according to local media.

Lifeguards and rescuers were called to join the frantic search to find him.

His five-year-old brother then screamed: “Riccardo is under the sand.”;
